Torino Torino is a major business and cultural district in northern Italy. Founded by the Romans over 2000 years ago, in 1861 it became the first capital of Italy playing a leading role in the nation's history as a city of many vocations: political, social and cultural. Although it owes its recent development mainly to industry, it offers today a variety of attractions: Roman ruins, Baroque monuments, urban landscapes, world-class museums - just like the Egyptian Museum, featuring the second most important collection after the one of Cairo - a vibrant cultural life and myriad opportunities for sport and recreation. The Residences of the Royal House of Savoy over in and around Torino represent a comprehensive overview of European monumental architecture in the 17th and 18th centuries and are part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. The region is also a renowned district for the varied and refined cuisine and the worldwide appreciated wines coming from the region of Langhe and Monferrato. Crossed by the river Po, the longest river in Italy, Torino is enclosed by an unbroken screen of mountains and hills and located at the center of a vast alpine region offering world-famous ski resorts. The success of the 2006 Olympic Winter Games has been an important step throughout an intense process of transformation of the city from an area dedicated to material production into a center of creation and sharing of knowledge, a pole of innovation, culture and improved quality of life. Easily accessible from all over Europe, Torino is served by the international Caselle airport, and by two major railway stations: Porta Nuova and Porta Susa.
